SA Budget invests in road safety

Share this article

The South Australian Government has included $98 million of new funding for road safety measures in its 2023-24 Budget.

The timely investment comes as the SA road toll remains higher than the five-year average at this point of the year.

Across 2023, 31 per cent of lives lost on South Australian roads have been attributed to excessive speed with a further 27 per cent attributed to dangerous driving.

The $98 million package includes a range of road safety measures and infrastructure investments including:

  • $40 million to upgrade the Mount Barker roundabout at the intersection of Adelaide, Alexandria, Wellington and Flaxley Roads;
  • $17.8 million for new speed cameras and upgraded technology, with all revenue to be returned to the Community Road Safety Fund;
  • $13.4 million for additional mobile phone detection cameras;
  • $6.2 million for road safety campaigns;
  • $6.2 million for Kangaroo Island road improvements and maintenance;
  • $3.8 million for the motorcycle Rider Safe reform program;
  • $494,000 to implement a new licencing scheme for ultra-high powered vehicles.
