Join Transport Australia in Melbourne on Thursday, 17 September for an industry lunch focused on the future of critical infrastructure underpinning Australia’s supply chain network.

As one of Australia’s largest container and cargo ports, Port of Melbourne is a critical gateway for Victoria’s imports and exports, and a central part of the freight network that keeps the economy moving. The port does not just move ships. It connects trade, industry, agriculture, manufacturing, road, rail, last mile logistics and more than 80 business operations across the port precinct.

Hear from Saul Cannon, Chief Executive Officer of Port of Melbourne, as he outlines the transport and infrastructure priorities shaping the port’s next phase, including landside connectivity, network resilience, mode shift to rail and the long-term planning needed for a fourth container terminal.

Transport Australia is also pleased to announce that Isaac Wingfield, Vice President, Head of Ports, Global Transportation, AECOM, will join Saul Cannon for this important industry discussion, bringing his extensive global ports and infrastructure experience to the conversation.

Port of Melbourne has continued to demonstrate strong supply chain resilience through COVID, the GFC and global disruption, including record trade in the most recent financial year. As freight demand grows, the next challenge is ensuring the transport network can support efficient movement across road, rail, freight corridors and last mile connections.

With planning underway for future container capacity, $200 million invested in rail infrastructure, a continued focus on road and rail integration, and planning underway for future terminal capacity, this is a vital conversation about how Victoria builds the freight network it will need for the decades ahead.

Saul Cannon: Chief Executive Officer, Port of Melbourne

Saul joined Port of Melbourne in November 2021 and brings to the role over 25 years of commercial, strategy, finance, legal and corporate governance experience. Most recently, Saul was Chief Financial Officer and Chief Strategy Officer at global logistics provider, Toll Group. Prior to Toll, Saul spent nearly a decade at ASX-listed Asciano Limited, which then owned the Patrick ports and Pacific National rail businesses. Saul holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Law (with honours) and is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at Harvard Business School in Boston.

Isaac Wingfield, Vice President – Head of Ports, Global Transportation, AECOM

Isaac Wingfield advises port authorities and terminal operators on planning and delivering infrastructure that supports long‑term growth while minimising operational disruptions. For more than 20 years, Isaac has delivered in the ports and waterfront sector, for numerous cargo types, and at major gateway ports and constrained operating environments.

He has led or overseen more than 180 projects worldwide spanning master planning, terminal expansion and modernisation, mega‑equipment integration, and program management. Isaac served as AECOM’s senior program manager for Georgia Ports Authority’s delivery of a 10‑year, $4.5 billion capital program, supporting executive decision‑making, investment sequencing, and delivery across multiple marine and inland terminals of over 110ha of new facilities, bridges, roadways, warehouses, and resiliency.

As AECOM’s Head of Ports for Global Transportation, Isaac brings a practical understanding of how vessel operations, terminal layouts, construction phasing, and capital planning intersect in live port environments.
