Transport Australia QLD Industry Lunch with Neil Stephens, Port of Brisbane

Transport Australia invites you to join Queensland’s transport and infrastructure community in Brisbane on Friday, 21 August for an industry lunch with Neil Stephens, CEO of the Port of Brisbane.

Neil will be joined by Sally Stannard, Director-General of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, for a timely conversation about the projects, connections and investment decisions shaping the Port’s next era.

For industry, this is an opportunity to:
•    hear directly from two of Queensland’s senior transport leaders
•    understand the long-term priorities likely to shape freight, ports and infrastructure planning
•    connect with government and industry leaders working across Queensland’s transport system

The future of freight

The Port of Brisbane handles 90 per cent of Queensland’s container trade and half of its agricultural exports. Its 1,900-hectare precinct supports around 80 trade businesses and more than 10,000 direct jobs and contributes around $11 billion to the Queensland economy each year.

As the Port marks its 50th anniversary, it is looking ahead to the infrastructure and partnerships needed to support population growth, rising trade volumes and Queensland’s economic future.

The discussion will explore:
•    Channel enhancement: The long-term planning underway to widen and deepen the Port’s approximate 90-kilometre shipping channel, meeting South-East Queensland’s future population growth and enabling Brisbane to safely welcome larger vessels of the future.
•    Port connectivity:  The need for seamless connectivity and dedicated road and rail corridors for freight.
•    Brisbane 2032: Effective planning and coordination of visitor, passenger and freight needs.

Keynote Speaker:

Neil Stephens: CEO, Port of Brisbane

Neil was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Port of Brisbane in March 2022, after acting as Interim CEO since July 2021. He joined the Port of Brisbane as Chief Financial Officer in mid-2020 overseeing all finance, funding, financial reporting, treasury and tax activities.

Prior to joining the Port, Neil was Business Development Director at Cardno plc, spent 8 years as the Chief Financial Officer then the Chief Operating Officer of Springfield City Group, and 2 years advising a variety of companies on funding, structuring, acquisitions, property and overall strategy.

Neil qualified with KPMG in the UK, before working in executive positions including Business Development and M&A Director at British Telecom, Commercial and Venturing Director at Reuters and Chief Financial Officer at two technology start up companies. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Economics and a Masters in Finance and Accountancy.

Sally Stannard: Director-General, Department of Transport and Main Roads

As Director-General, Sally Stannard leads the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). Sally was Acting Director-General from 5 June 2023 and formally appointed in December 2023, taking on the leadership of TMR’s portfolio of work across road, rail, bus, cycling and marine infrastructure in Queensland.
